Ukiyo | Premium Lager Beer

Ukiyo | Premium Lager Beer was originally part of our Imaginarium Project and was so popular and delicious we scaled it up, brewed it on the big system, and it’s now pouring on draft lines all over the state.

Ukiyo is a 4.25% crisp and refreshing version of a Japanese rice lager with the addition of jasmine and green tea. Six-pack cans are currently only available at the brewery. Look for a full market release of Ukiyo in cans (complete with a unique design) in the coming months. This is a beer we’re extremely proud of and hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Inceptus + Heavy Bell release

We started Three Taverns with a reverence and an affinity for Belgian-style beers. It’s part of our DNA. The first couple of years we committed to brewing world-class Belgian-style beers; ones like Single Intent and Quasimodo. From there we spread our wings and began to brew outside the confines of Belgian-styles and started creating beers we like to drink, A Night on Ponce IPA and Prince of Pilsen, for example.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But we haven’t forgotten our Belgian roots! This Saturday (6/22) we’ll be releasing two of our most popular Belgian-style beers, Inceptus and Heavy Bell. We also will have special cheese pairings with each beer - this is an event you don’t want to miss!

Inceptus is a 6% Georgia Wild Ale spontaneously fermented in red wine barrels – funky apricot notes, delicate, and clean.

Heavy Bell is a 11% bourbon barrel aged Quadrupel and this year’s version is easily the best to date – rich dark fruit notes, subtle vanilla and caramel, and remarkably dry.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Both will be available on draught and in bottles to-go, with Heavy Bell for the first time in (12oz) 4-packs. Look for these to hit shelves in the coming weeks.

Behind the 3 | Riley Finnigan

Riley Finnigan is the brewmaster at Three Taverns and oversees all beer production and packaging. He recently joined the 3T family after spending two years brewing abroad in Spain and before that, six years at Avery Brewing in Boulder, Colorado. Read more about him below in our "Behind the 3" feature, where we highlight instrumental folks of Three Taverns:

What was your first experience with craft beer?
Growing up craft beer was always around. Brews like Rogue's Dead Guy and Deschutes' Mirror Pond Pale were in our fridge in place of macro-lagers. Growing up in Oregon meant drinking good beer was the default, not the exception. I specifically remember falling in love with Black Butte Porter on a camping trip with some friends.

What do you like most about being a brewer and running the show at Three Taverns?
Brewing at Three Taverns is great. The brewhouse is the perfect mix of automation and "hands-on brewing". The pilot system also allows the whole crew to express themselves creatively, which leads to some really fun things going on tap in the tasting room. What I like most about running the show around here is the ability to call people out when they play terrible music.

Where were you born/raised?
I was born outside of Dallas and moved all over as a young kid. But Oregon will always be home; I grew up in Bend.

What are some of your favorite spots in Atlanta to eat/drink/hang?
So far my favorite spots to hang in Atlanta are the great music venues - Terminal West and Variety Playhouse are great. The Earl in East Atlanta Village, and of course The Tabernacle.

Desert island beer?
This is such an impossible question to answer. Depending on the location and climate of said island, I'm gonna go with either Modelo Especial, Maui's Coconut Porter, or Odell IPA.

When you’re not drinking beer what are you drinking?
Water or Tequila/Mezcal.

Besides beer, what are some of your other interests/hobbies?
Going to shows, playing guitar and mandolin, traveling, hiking, backpacking, and snowboarding.

Last great movie you saw/book you read/album you listened to?
Last great book I read was probably David Byrne's "How Music Works". Favorite album of the last year or so is Rayland Baxter's "Wide Awake".

Three Taverns + DCM

amplify3t.png

Last weekend we hung out with friends and neighbors at the annual Amplify Music Festival, taking place just down the road from the brewery on the Decatur Square. We’ve been a part of this festival since the very beginning and apart from it being a great lineup of musicians (Mavis Staples, The Lone Bellow, Jeff Tweedy, Lucinda Williams, Noah Gunderson, and Julien Baker just to name a few) it also benefits an incredible cause – the Decatur Cooperative Ministry. Here’s a little more about DCM from our founder, Brian Purcell:

You might have noticed the phrase “Transcendo Mediocris” written on our bottle and cans. Three Taverns aims to do just that. To “surpass the ordinary.” We are super inspired when we see others doing this on a daily basis in our community. One particular non-profit in Decatur is surpassing the ordinary in extraordinary ways. They’ve inspired us so much that we have decided to partner with them and support their service to others on a larger scale. Decatur Cooperative Ministry does incredible things to help families who are facing homelessness to settle into safe, stable homes, and build healthy lives filled with peace, hope, and opportunity.

Three Taverns believes that DCM really digs deep into helping those facing homelessness for a lifetime, not just a day. DCM has many homelessness prevention and housing programs that are making a huge difference in the lives of so many. Programs such as Project Take Charge that helps prevent individuals and families from homelessness and provides a small food pantry and food co-op for veterans and seniors, to Hagar’s House which provides homeless families and children safe shelter for 90 days and involves intensive case management and support services. They also run Family House which offers six months of housing and supportive services to families to ensure a smooth transition into permanent housing, as well as Family Success which provides permanent housing and services to chronically homeless families.

As you can see, DCM doesn’t just help a family one time, they go deeper and help improve lives for a lifetime. In fact, DCM’s combined programs connected over 1,500 individuals with the resources they needed to prevent or exit homelessness in 2018 alone. We think that’s a great example of surpassing the ordinary and we are thrilled to support their incredible work!

Last weekend Three Taverns once again helped sponsor Decatur’s own music festival, Amplify, which contributes substantial funding to DCM. And our third annual 3T5K (happening at the brewery on May 18th) gives all of its proceeds to DCM. Atlanta Magazine took note of this awesome race and even awarded the 5K with a “Best of Atlanta” award in 2018. We have plans to continue and broaden our support of DCM so they can continue to do what they do so well.

You’ll be hearing more about DCM and ways you can join hands with us in supporting this great cause to fight homelessness. For starters, if you are interested in volunteering to help at the upcoming 3T5K on May 18th, please contact Susie@threetavernsbrewery.com.

Cheers and happy drinking,
Brian

2nd Annual Mable-McNally St Paddy's Procession

Join us in downtown Decatur on Saturday, March 16th, for the second-annual ‘Mable-McNally St Paddy’s Procession’ which honors two legendary Decatur Irishmen: Maury Mable, the Pied-Piper of Decatur, and Patrick McNally, the Squire of the Square.

Mable first marched through the streets of Decatur on St. Patrick’s Day in 1895 to celebrate his ancestral homeland and continued to lead what became an annual Decatur parade and tradition for over 50 years.

McNally passed away last year and was a longtime Brick Store regular and Decatur fixture. Said Mike Gallagher of Brick Store Pub, “In our almost 22 year history we can’t think of a single individual that had more of an impact on our staff and community than Patrick McNally. His legacy lives on with his children and grandchildren in our community. And of course, through some of his jokes that continue to make the rounds!”

We’ll depart from the corner of Commerce Dr and Sycamore Pl at Fellini’s (Maury Mable’s residence was just across the street) as fellow Irishman Mike Gallagher leads everyone, bagpiper and all, through the streets of Decatur, finishing at Brick Store Pub where we’ll raise a glass of our 2019 Maury Mable’s Irish Stout. Sláinte!
